Research and Development funded by PSD
Scope
PSD spends about 5.7 million pounds each year on two areas of research:
The first supports our regulatory work and includes developing better ways to assess and manage risks arising from pesticide use. Approvals Home
The second supports Government policy to reduce the adverse impact of pesticide use. This research covers environmentally friendly crop protection practices and ways to protect biodiversity. It includes alternative technologies and integrated crop management systems that reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. Reducing Environmental Impact
Research Reports
PSD commissioned research to evaluate the performance of the Voluntary Initiative for pesticides. The final report (pdf, 167 pages) is now available.
Reports on the research commissioned by PSD are available on the Defra Science website:
PSD has also funded the production of reports from ADAS on the incidence of pests, weeds and diseases in a broad range of cropping situations. These are available on this website:
PSD have commissioned a series of trials to investigate reports of declining effect of triazoles against Septoria tritici. If these trials show poor performance against Septoria, action may have to be taken to modify the label claims of relevant products.

(Final report now available)
PSD commissioned research, looking at the economic and agronomic impact of Directive 91/414EEC on pesticide regulation. The final reports are now available;
- The Economic Impact of Directive 91/414/EEC on Pesticide Regulation (Defra Proof Copy) (PS2525) (pdf 28 pages)
- The Economic Impact of Directive 91/414/EEC and Legislation on Maximum Residue Levels (pdf, 48 pages)
- The Agronomic Impact of Directive 91/414/EEC on Pesticide Regulation (Defra Proof Copy) (PS2526) (MS Word 38 pages)
- Assessment of the Agronomic Impact of Directive 91/414/EEC and Legislation on Maximum Residue Levels (pdf, 293 pages)
Defra Information
Further information on current research is in the Pesticide Safety Directorate Science and Innovation Strategy on the Defra website.
Advisory Groups
The Pesticide Residue Committee (PRC), the Pesticides Forum and the Advisory Committee on Pesticides (ACP) may identify areas where research would help underpin their advice. The results are used to improve the regulatory system and the delivery of policy.
