2007 Grapes Survey: Late April and May Results

PRC Secretariat
21 June 2007

Detailed Results

The detailed results (5 pages, 19 KB) are in pdf format. They include details of brand names and where the samples were taken.

Are there any health effects expected from the residues found?

PSD has carried out four risk assessments on the results. In all cases PSD concluded that no effects on health would be expected. The Food Standards Agency has checked and agreed these assessments.

6 samples contained residues of captan at levels from 0.06 mg/kg to 0.2 mg/kg. An MRL of 0.02 mg/kg came into effect on 11 May 2007 and therefore the 3 samples containing captan collected after 11 May were in breach of the new MRL

PSD decided no follow-up action was needed before the PRC discusses the results - see risk assessments.

1 sample contained a residue of chlorpyrifos of 1.1 mg/kg. The MRL for chlorpyrifos in table grapes is 0.5 mg/kg.

PSD decided no follow-up action was needed before the PRC discusses the results - see risk assessments.

1 sample contained a residue of folpet of 0.9 mg/kg. The Codex MRL for folpet in table grapes, which was valid at the time of sampling, was 2 mg/kg. An MRL of 0.02 mg/kg came into effect on 11 May 2007.

PSD decided no follow-up action was needed before the PRC discusses the results - see risk assessments.

1 sample contained a residue of more than one organophosphorus pesticide

PSD decided no follow-up action was needed before the PRC discusses the results - see risk assessments.

When will the Pesticide Residues Committee formally consider these results?

The Pesticide Residues Committee have seen these results and will discuss them at their next meeting in July 2007. The Committee will discuss the results for Quarter 2 (April to June) 2007 as a whole at their meeting in October 2007.

Summary of Results

How many samples did you take?

31

Where did they come from?

All 31 samples were imported from outside the EU

  • 15 from Chile
  • 13 from India
  • 3 from South Africa

How many samples contained residues above the MRL?

4 samples contained residues above the MRL

  • 3 samples from Chile sampled after 11 May 2007 contained residues of captan above the MRL that is now in force
  • 1 sample from Chile contained a residue of chlorpyrifos above the MRL

MRLs apply to the sale or supply of food at any stage in the supply chain, not just when they leave the farm gate or when they are bought by the final consumer.

How many samples contained only residues below the MRL or of pesticides with no MRL in table grapes?

16 samples contained only residues below the MRL or of pesticides with no MRL in table grapes

  • 11 from Chile
  • 4 from India
  • 1 from South Africa

How many samples contained more than one residue?

13 samples contained more than one residue

  • 1 sample from Chile contained 2 residues
  • 2 samples from Chile contained 3 residues
  • 3 samples from Chile contained 4 residues
  • 4 samples from Chile contained 5 residues
  • 1 sample from Chile contained 6 residues
  • 1 sample from Chile contained 7 residues
  • 1 sample from Chile contained 8 residues

Acute risk assessments for samples containing more than one organophosphorus/carbamate or folpet/captan pesticide

Grape containing azinphos-methyl and chlorpyrifos

Azinphos-methyl (0.02 mg/kg of commodity) and chlorpyrifos (0.05 mg/kg of commodity) - On carrying out a combined risk assessment, the intakes for azinphos-methyl are up to 1.6% of the azinphos-methyl acute reference dose (0.075 mg/kg body weight/day, PSD 2006) and the intakes of chlorpyrifos are up to 3.1% of the chlorpyrifos acute reference dose (0.1 mg/kg body weight/day, EU 2005). Therefore, no effect on health would be expected from the combined intake of azinphos-methyl and chlorpyrifos in this sample.
