Replacement of the Long Term Arrangements for Extension of Use (LTAEU) for non-edible crops

Regulatory Update 26/2006

Date Issued: 19/12/2006

The LTAEU were introduced as a temporary measure in the late 1980s to allow pesticides to be used on listed minor crops. Since that time UK pesticide approvals have gradually been transferring to EU based legislation.

The arrangements, however, do not fit with the EU system where specific approvals are required for all uses. As more and more products are approved under the EU regime the arrangements are effectively being invalidated, and so specific off-label approvals (SOLAs) need to be issued to cover those uses previously covered by the arrangements. Following consultation with growers, the edible uses in the LTAEU have now been replaced by 1200 SOLAs, based on requests from growers. The LTAEU extrapolations relating to edible crops will no longer be valid from 1 January 2007.

We are now starting to look at the non-edible uses in the arrangements with a view to replacing them as well. In order for PSD to gauge the size of this exercise we are asking likely users of the non-edible LTAEU for information on the numbers of products involved. If you use these arrangements, we would be grateful if you could supply us with a list of products and crop combinations that you currently use and would wish to see transferring to a SOLA approval. Responses should be submitted by e-mail to francis.daly@hse.gsi.gov.uk or by post to Francis Daly, Pesticides Safety Directorate, Mallard House, Kings Pool, 3 Peasholme Green, York, YO1 7PX by 16 February 2007. Full details of the current non-edible LTAEU uses can be found in Appendix 1.

Also included is a list of other people we have contacted at Appendix 2. If you know of anyone else we should contact, we would be grateful if you could either inform them of this exercise or supply their details to Francis Daly to contact directly.

If you require more information or would like to discuss this further, please contact Francis Daly telephone number 01904 455824 or email francis.daly@hse.gsi.gov.uk
