UK Minor Uses Introduction

Introduction

Minor uses are either uses of pesticides on small area cropping or against infrequent pests.

A large number of crops grown in the UK can be classed as minor uses and Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD) support these in a number of ways, including Specific Off-Label Approvals (SOLA) and support for Essential Uses.

CRD is committed to supporting minor use initiatives relating to the control of pests, weeds and diseases that enable UK growers to produce quality produce. As part of this role CRD is involved in European Commission working groups that are investigating and co-ordinating Member States efforts and resources into support for minor uses.

In addition to this CRD have co-ordinated a UK Minor Uses Network ( a group of UK grower representatives and industry researchers to look at UK specific problems). This group was set up to help inform both CRD and the European Commission on efforts to support minor crop production. In April 2008 the Minor Uses Network merged with the Availability Action Plan Group and the Horticultural Industry Liaison Group. Further information on the meetings of this merged group can be found on the following page: Availability Action Plan Group
