The European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO) is the recognised Regional Plant Protection Organisation (RPPO) for the European and Mediterranean region under the International Plant Protection Convention established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
EPPO plays an important role in setting international standards for the generation and interpretation of data for pesticide registration in some areas. EPPO standards on plant protection products include:
- 'Guidelines on the efficacy evaluation of Plant Protection Products', of which over 200 are now available. EU directive 93/71 makes the EPPO guidelines the minimum requirement that efficacy testing must be conducted to, where they are available.
- 'Guidelines on Good plant protection practice' which set out optimal practice on the protection of specific crops against their pests, diseases and weeds. Crops for which guidelines are currently available include allium, beet, barley, brassicas, lettuce, potato, rape, strawberry and wheat.
- Guidelines on resistance risk analysis.
Copies of these guidelines are available from EPPO
CRD represents the UK on a number of EPPO panels and expert groups that are responsible for writing and developing guidance.
