Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What do I need to do about pesticide residues when I import foodstuffs into the UK?
You must check that pesticide residues in the food you are importing are within any relevant limits. These are called 'Maximum Residue levels' (MRLs). MRLs set under Regulation 396/2005 apply to all foods marketed within the EC, irrespective of whether they are produced within or outside the EC. In some cases, MRLs that have been based on EC uses of pesticides will not be sufficient to cover the residues resulting from uses in third countries. Alternatively, MRLs may be needed for pesticides not authorised for use in the EC, but which nevertheless can legitimately be used to treat commodities in third countries. In these circumstances you must apply for appropriate MRLs (‘import tolerances’) before the commodities are imported
You should also follow general guidance about importing food from the Food Standards Agency website and the Association of Port Health Authorities
Q2. How do I apply for 'import tolerances'?
CRD is able to accept applications for import tolerances for those pesticides for which the UK is Rapporteur Member State (RMS). CRD can also evaluate applications where no RMS has been allocated, or where it is not practical for the designated RMS to evaluate an import tolerance application. In these circumstances, you should first discuss options with CRD and, if relevant, the designated RMS.

Q3. Can I import produce treated with a substance banned in the EC?
Yes, as long as pesticide residues are within any relevant Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) or you follow the Food Safety Act.
Q4. Can I get produce tested for pesticide residues before I import into the UK?
Yes; it is possible to have samples of produce tested for pesticide residues before you import it into the UK. There are a number of independent laboratories in the UK which offer this service. As a Government department, we cannot recommend laboratories to you; however you can find a list of companies from local telephone directories or from the internet..
