Immediate Revocation of Uses for some Products Containing Carbendazim due to Reduced Maximum Residue Levels

Regulatory Update: 14/2006

Issued: 29 June 2006

Introduction

In the light of a new European Community (EC) assessment of data comparing maximum residue levels (MRLs) with the acute reference dose established by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), action has been taken to reduce some of the EC MRLs set for carbendazim. These reduced MRLs are set to come into force on 15 September 2006.

The new MRLs are set below the levels that would support continued use of products on specific crops, so as a result action was taken on 28 June to revoke specific plant protection uses for a number of plant protection products to prevent those crops being placed on the market with levels of residue above the statutory limits.

Products under revocation

The specific revocations are as follows:

  • Bavistin (MAPP 00217) – revocation of use on apple (on-label use);
  • Bavistin DF (MAPP 03848) – revocation of use on apple (on-label use); and protected cucumber grown on synthetic/inert media, protected celery, pear (spray) and pear (dip) (off-label use);
  • Cleancrop Curve (MAPP 11774) – revocation of use on pear (spray), pear (dip), protected cucumber grown on synthetic/inert media, protected celery and protected rhubarb (all off-label uses);
  • Clayton Chizm FL (MAPP 11050) – revocation of use on pear (spray), pear (dip), protected cucumber grown on synthetic/inert media, and protected celery (all off-label uses);
  • Headland Addstem (MAPP 06755) – revocation of use on apple and pear (both on-label uses);
  • Headland Addstem DF (MAPP 08904) – revocation of use on apple (on-label use);
  • Murphy Systemic Action Fungicide (MAPP 07558) – revocation of use on apple, celery and cucumber (all on-label uses);
  • Delsene 50 Flo (MAPP 11452) – revocation of use on protected cucumber grown on synthetic/inert media, pear (spray), pear (dip) apple (spray) and protected celery (all off-label uses).

Action for growers and suppliers

Because they are safety based, the revocations take immediate effect. No further supply of this product with current recommendations for use is allowed, or further use of the product on the revoked crops identified.

A period of 6 months has been granted for storage of plant protection products with current labelling, to allow time for product to be re-labelled and marketed in accordance with the revised approval.
