Products Approved for Use In or Near Water

Pesticides must not be used in or near water unless the conditions of approval, specifically allows such use. Such pesticides may be subject to additional statutory conditions which will be detailed on the product label.

Revised "Guidelines for the use of Herbicides on Weeds in or near Watercourses and Lakes" (PB 2289) were published in September 1995 and advise on the precautions that should be taken especially where fresh water may be abstracted for the irrigation of crops, watering of livestock, fisheries or in fish farming. Situations defined for such treatment include drainage channels, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, reservoirs, canals and dry ditches. These guidelines also cover the control of vegetation growing on the banks, or areas immediately adjacent to such water bodies, but not the control of vegetation growing on nearby cropped or amenity land. The only hard copy of this book are photocopies or an electronic 'pdf' version can be obtained from our Information Section.
