The Directorate is responsible for:
- Regulatory controls on pesticides and biocides.
- Providing the UK Competent Authority role for REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals).
- Providing policy advice to Ministers for pesticides issues and support for policy colleagues in HSE and Defra on biocides and REACH.
- Monitoring and surveillance of pesticides and taking enforcement action against illegal use.
- Supporting the UK and EU reviews of the safety of chemicals on the market.
- Designated National Authority role for Great Britain under Regulation (EC)No 689/2008, implementing the Rotterdam Convention on the prior informed consent procedure for the export and import of banned or severely restricted chemicals and pesticides.
- Technical aspects for classification and labelling of chemicals.
- Co-ordinating a programme of pesticide research and development to complement the pesticides regulatory system and support our policy objectives.
- Providing corporate resources for HSE in the specialist areas covered by the Directorate in relation to HSE's activities on chemicals.
- Providing the secretariat role for Advisory Committees (ACP, WATCH).
- Communication and information dissemination on all aspects of the Directorates port folio.
