CRD Events for 2013/14

The Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD) is pleased to announce its conference and events programme for 2013/2014. We have tried to expand the programme to meet the needs of our stakeholders using suggestions which we received from previous events feedback forms. We have had lots of suggestions from this years attendees and whilst we have tried to cater for as many of these as possible we have not been able to meet all the requests.
CRD is committed to communicating effectively with our stakeholders. One of the ways in which CRD is able to keep our stakeholders up to date is through our Conference and Events programme. During the next year CRD will be hosting a wide range of events which are aimed at providing training and updates on many aspects of pesticide, biocide, and chemical regulation.
Please find below our proposed schedule of events for the forthcoming year. Please note that the date of each event has been provided as an indication; the exact date will be confirmed at a later date. If you are interested in attending any of the events or require further information please email our events team at events@hse.gsi.gov.uk. You will then be placed on a waiting list and be informed when the details of the event are finalised. Please note that registering your interest does not commit you to attending the event. We are also interested to hear any feedback you may have on the proposed programme.
| Date | Event | Proposed location | Further Information |
| Conferences and seminars |
| 6th June 2013 | Biocide New Regulation Implementation (New) CRD will be holding a one-day seminar which will provide an overview of the new Biocidal Product Regulation. The Regulation supersedes the Biocidal Products Directive (98/8/EC) in the UK and comes into force on 1st September, 2013. The seminar is designed for companies and individuals who will be affected by, or have duties under, the new Regulation. | CRD, Redgrave Court, Bootle, UK. | COURSE FULL |
| Workshops (< 12 delegates) |
| 10th July 2013 | Dermal Absorption Assessments for Plant Protection Products (Updated) Dermal absorption is one of the critical end-points in the exposure assessment of pesticide products. It is also one of theend-points where there is often disagreement between the CRD conclusion and that of the applicant. A recent EFSA opinion and revised EC guidance should help improve consistency of interpretation. The workshop will identify contentious aspects in past applications; present the new EC guidance criteria, highlighting changes versus current practices; and provide some worked examples based on the new guidance. | CRD, York, UK | To Follow Shortly |
| September 2013 | Two Day Technical Fate and Behaviour Assessment of Plant Protection Products (Updated) The course will provide a practical introduction to the main fate exposure tools available for soil, surface water and groundwater. This will include practical introductions to the FOCUS groundwater and surface water models for example. UK specific regulatory requirements in this area will also be covered (e.g. to assess the drainflow and spray drift routes of surface water exposure). An update on future regulatory developments in the field will also be provided. The course is aimed at people with a basic working knowledge of fate who want to develop their expertise in this area. | CRD, York, UK | To Follow Shortly |
| October 2013 | Biocide Chemistry Workshop (Updated) A one day workshop focusing on the key areas of the chemistry risk assessment for biocides. The aim of the event will be to provide training and guidance, via a series of presentations and practical workshops, on the chemistry risk assessment for biocides regulated under the new regulation 528/2012. The event will cover new legislation and new data requirements, draw attention to new and revised guidance, and highlight commonly encountered problems. The workshop will be designed for technical specialists involved in the generation of the data and registration specialists involved in the preparation and submission of biocide dossiers to CRD. | CRD, York, UK | To Follow Shortly |
| February 2014 | Consumer Risk Assessment Training Day (Updated) A one day workshop aimed at providing training and the latest guidance on consumer risk assessment for pesticides. The guidance will focus on the appropriate use of residue values in conducting assessments and the use of risk assessment models. The workshop will include presentations and practical workshops covering consumer related issues of current and emerging interest. The suggested audience would be registration specialists involved in the preparation and submission of dossiers and applications to CRD. | CRD, York, UK | To Follow Shortly |
| TBC | Pesticides: EU Classification and Labelling of Plant Protection Products This event will cover the systems and criteria introduced by the Regulation on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP Regulation; EC/1272/2008) and its significance for the suppliers of plant protection products. The potential for closer integration of activities managed respectively by the European Food Standards Agency (EFSA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will be discussed. | CRD, Bootle, UK | To Follow Shortly |
| TBC | Human Exposure Assessment of Biocides Workshop (New) A one day workshop aimed at providing training in human exposure risk assessments for biocide products. The workshop will include presentations and practical sessions covering a range of issues including user types, primary and secondary exposure scenarios, risk envelope approach, higher tier refinements and model selection using illustrative examples primarily, but not exclusively, drawing from our experience to date evaluating wood preservative (PT8) and rodenticide (PT14) products under the Biocidal products Directive. Information will also be provided with regard to accessing relevant information, EU groups/processes and recent EU developments. | CRD, York | To Follow Shortly |
| TBC | Two Day Ecotoxicological Risk Assessment of Plant Protection Products (Updated) An interactive 2-day workshop to provide guidance on ecotoxicological risk assessment of plant protection products. Covering Tier I and higher tier approaches for all ecotoxicological groups, as well as appropriate refinement options (discussing best practice and common pitfalls) for key areas of the risk assessment. The suggested audience would be registration specialists involved in the preparation andsubmission of PPP dossiers to CRD. | CRD, York, UK | To Follow Shortly |

Bespoke Training for Individual Organisations
In addition to running our general training programme, CRD also offers bespoke training for individual organisations on both technical and procedural matters. The main benefit to the delivery of bespoke training is that the training is specifically tailored to meet your organisation’s individual needs and enables you to address specific problem areas that are relevant to your organisation. This training can be delivered at CRD's offices in York, or at a location of your choice.
CRD has previously organised the following bespoke training events for various organisations and Member States:
- Co-ordination & Procedures
- Physical/Chemical Properties
- Fate & Behaviour
- Ecotoxicology
- Consumer Risk Assessment & Residues
- Operator Exposure
- Biological Assessment Dossier (BAD)
If you would be interested in discussing the possibility of CRD providing your organisation with a tailor-made training programme, or if you would simply like us to deliver an existing training programme at your office, please contact Jon Winfield by emailing jon.winfield@hse.gsi.gov.uk or by calling + 44 (0) 1904 455748.
In accordance with our financial remit, CRD has to recover costs for the work it delivers. Consequently, a charge would have to be made for the preparation and delivery of the training, and any associated travel and subsistence costs.
Please note that CRD will not be able to provide advice on specific application work as part of the bespoke service. Such queries should be dealt with in the usual manner.
