Withdrawal of Pesticide Products as a result of the EC Review Programme
Since 1995 a number of products have been withdrawn as a result of the EC review programme.
Background
The European Community (EC) review programme ensures the safety of all pesticides used throughout the EC. It ensures they are evaluated to modern standards. The basis of the EC review programme is set out in Article 8.2 of Council Directive 91/414/EEC (implemented in the UK by the Plant Protection Products Regulations 1995 as amended PPPR). The Directive provides for the establishment of a positive list of active substances (Annex I to Directive 91/414/EEC) that have been shown to be without unacceptable risk to people or the environment. The review programme has been set out in four stages each consisting of lists of active substances to be reviewed, these are detailed in several Commission Regulations.
When an active substance has been reviewed in the EC and not included in Annex I, or if it was not supported at the beginning of the review, or later withdrawn from the review by the notifier (company), the authorisations for plant protection products containing the substances must be withdrawn within a period specified in the Commission Decision.
The review of existing active substances is now complete.
