Our European work covers a wide range of activities:
Regulation of plant protection products in Europe under the authorisation Directive 91/414/EEC
CRD is the UK Competent Authority in the European Community (EC) process for the registration of new active substances, review of existing active substances and regulation of plant protection products to ensure their safety and effectiveness.

Setting maximum residue levels (MRLs)
CRD works within the EC process for setting MRLs for pesticides to support trade to, and within, EC Member States.
Developing pesticide regulation in Europe
The EU Thematic Strategy for Pesticides includes proposals for:
- replacing Council Directive 91/414/EEC with a Regulation concerning the placing of plant protection products on the market;
- a Directive relating to the sustainable use of pesticides;
- a Regulation on pesticide statistics.

Classification and labelling of plant protection products
CRD ensures that plant protection products are classified and labelled in accordance with harmonised EC rules to support their safe use, storage and transport.

CRD is the Competent Authority in the UK for detergents.

Biocides (Information on main HSE website)
CRD is now the regulatory authority for biocides in the UK (The Chemicals Assessment Schemes Unit (CASU) of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) joined the former PSD to form this organisation) . The Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) (information on main HSE website)
CRD is the UK competent authority (working closely with the Environment Agency) for the control of 'general' chemicals in the European marketplace. The REACH webpages on the main HSE website contain information on this European work.
CRD work in the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO)
Our work in the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO) which sets standards and provides guidelines in the areas of efficacy, pesticide resistance and good plant protection practice.

Areas of European work that are outside CRD's responsibility
Work on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is responsible for UK policy on POPs, with advice from CRD where pesticides are involved.
