Creation of the Chemicals Regulation Directorate in HSE - 1st April 2009

‘Protecting the health of people and the environment’.

The Health and Safety Executive announces the creation of the Chemicals Regulation Directorate (CRD) on the 1st April 2009. The portfolio of the new Directorate will be wide ranging, bringing together the delivery of HSE 's responsibilities for pesticides, biocides, detergents, and industrial chemicals (REACH, Classification, Labelling and other legislation). The Directorate will integrate the existing functions of the regulatory and policy work of the Pesticides Safety Directorate, and the Chemicals Schemes Assessment Unit of HSE, along with elements of human exposure and socio-economic assessment into a single regulatory unit.

This is a superb opportunity to bring together the responsibilities for regulatory science, operational policy and enforcement into a single delivery body. The Directorate will build on the existing excellent reputations both domestically and in Europe to ensure a high standard of service delivery to industry and stakeholders. The key message to our stakeholders is business as usual, with all telephone and postal addresses remaining the same.

Kerr Wilson, Director of CRD said:

“Bringing together the delivery of HSE responsibilities for pesticides, biocides detergents and industrial chemicals into one Directorate has the potential to provide all stakeholders with a better regulatory service.”

This is an exciting time for the new Directorate as it builds new teams and structures and faces fresh challenges. We expect business delivery to be maintained to a high standard and anticipate no adverse effect on the overall quality of regulatory and policy work.
