Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 (SI 1986 No. 1510): Approval

Notice is hereby given that in exercise of the powers conferred by Regulation 5 of the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 (SI 1986/1510) (as amended)and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, the Secretary of State, and the Scottish Ministers (as regards Scotland) and the National Assembly for Wales and the Secretary of State (acting jointly as regards Wales), have given full approval for the use of the following commodity substance: Commodity Substance: being Urea.

This Approval is Subject to the Following Conditions

Field of use

Only as a forestry fungicide.

Crops/Situations

Cut stumps of trees.

Maximum Individual Dose

1 litre of 37% w/v aqueous solution/m2 of cut stump.

Maximum number of treatments

One per cut stump.

Latest time of application

At felling.

Operator Protection

When used at work, the following must be observed:

  1. Engineering control of operator exposure must be used where reasonably practicable in addition to the following personal protective equipment: Operators must wear suitable protective gloves when mixing urea solution.
  2. However, engineering controls may replace personal protective equipment if a Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) assessment shows they provide an equal or higher standard of protection.

Advisory Notes

  1. Pesticides approved for amateur use may be used by professional operators without user certification.
  2. For the treatment of cut stumps of trees, the following dyes may be used at 0.04% w/v concentration when mixed with solution of urea:
    1. Kenacid Turquoise V5898 (CI Acid Blue 42045);
    2. Denacid Turquoise AN 200 (CI Acid Blue 9 42090);
    3. Duasyn Acid Blue AE-20 (CI Acid Blue 9 42090).
  1. Operators should wear rubber or other chemical-proof gloves, a nuisance dust mask and a cotton/terylene overall when handling dye powder.
