Changes to the Statutory Conditions of Use of Grass Weed Herbicides

PSD Regulatory Update 16/2006 outlined amendments to the Statutory Conditions of Use of grass weed herbicides containing Acetyl Coenzyme A Carboxylase ( ACCase) and Acetolactate Synthase ( ALS) inhibitors.

PSD has received requests from industry to publish a list of the active substances and products that are affected by these restrictions.

Which active substances are affected?

The restrictions and label wordings contained in Regulatory Update 16/2006 are applicable to all approvals of products containing the following active substances.

Active substances acting by ACCase inhibition

Clodinafop-propargyl

Fenoxaprop-p-ethyl

Fluazifop-p-butyl

Propaquizafop

Quizalofop-p-ethyl

Quizalofop-p-tefuryl

Tepraloxydim#

Cycloxydim

Tralkoxydim

Pinoxaden

Diclofop-methyl

Active substances acting by ALS inhibition (with claims for control of grass weeds or that are shown to exert a selection pressure on high resistance risk grass weeds)

Flupyrsulfuron-methyl

Iodosulfuron methyl sodium (product Hussar only*)

Mesosulfuron-methyl

Nicosulfuron

Rimsulfuron

Sulfosulfuron

Propoxycarbazone-sodium

* The products ‘Chekker’ and ‘Sekator’ apply 3 and 3.75 g/ha iodosulfuron methyl sodium but the approval holder has provided data that at these doses there is no significant selection pressure on grass weeds so the restrictions have not been applied to these products. ‘Atlantis WG’ and 'Pacifica' apply iodosulfuron methyl sodium at 2.4 and 5 g/ha respectively but are sold in mixture with mesosulfuron-methyl which has grass weed activity. These products are subject to the restrictions.

# Onions & Leeks (July 2006). An exemption was granted for the use of a split dose application of tepraloxydim for the control of annual meadow grass. If black-grass, wild-oats and Italian ryegrass are major weeds then the label advice is that only one application of tepraloxydim should be used.

This list is correct as at 9 October 2006. It will not be updated, so for any new products please check using the link in the next paragraph.

How can I keep updated on affected products?

Until all stocks of products have the appropriate warnings and restrictions on their labels the best way to keep up to date with which products are affected is to use the PSD Pesticides Register Database and conduct a search either of the product in question or by active substance.

For further information or queries on these changes please contact Ingrid den Hoed by telephoning 01904 455781 by email to ingrid.den_hoed@hse.gsi.gov.uk or in writing.
